Recently I had the opportunity to interview Gabriela
Interiano (Gabs Interia) via e-mail about negotiating in the entertainment
business. Gabriela Interiano, is a singer/songwriter who just recently made her first music
video with her single Live It Up. She is a proud Guatemalan/American who now resides in Los Angeles, CA. where she is making her dream come
true. According to Gabs Interia, when it comes to business, you have to put
your feelings aside and understand that both negotiators and entertainers are
trying to sell a product: “When it comes
to business, there are no emotions, only facts. Both sides need to evaluate
their best interest until coming to a settlement”. Gabriela Interiano (Gabs
Interia). It is true on what Gabs Interia says because we have to be aware
of what our goals on a negotiation are.
Gabs Interia was able to give some value tips for the new
negotiators in the entertainment business. The most important tip is that it
takes a lot of time and effort to do a great negotiation, here are the words of
Gabs Interia: “It takes concistency,
educated persistency and serious entertainment knowledge to understand and to
move higher up in the ladder in this business”. It is clear that no one can
be an excellent negotiator without practice, knowledge and networking. Practice; we have to know and
understand that our first negotiation might not be accordingly of what we
expect. Over time, after practicing different types of negotiations, we might get
at the top of the ladder. Knowledge; it is important
to know who are we working with, more when it comes to the entertainment
business. Networking; our network plays a very important role in this business.
Let’s put it this way: People know people… that know people. Or just like our
artist says: “Clearly networking with the
right people takes a huge part in this journey.” Gabriela Interiano (Gabs
Interia).
In a question asked to Gabs Interia on how does she handle
positional bargaining tactics, she answered: “…possible solutions that isn’t working by solving the problems at hand
while expressing your assets…” . when positional bargaining comes into
place in a negotiation it is a good idea to have clear how much can an artist
allows and how much the negotiator is willing to give, and vice versa. The last
question asked to Gabs Interia was to give an example of how she had worked
toward mutual benefit when she was negotiating for a deal, and this was her
response: “…showing the actual/current product (i.e. entertainer)
growing audience, Social media impact and overall product positive influence to
the business.” Gabs Interia.
I want to thank deeply Gabriela
Interiano (Gabs Interia) for letting me interview her in her busy schedule. Also
