ESPN started
airing its first show on September 7 of 1979 with SportsCenter’s premiere show,
live from ESPN studio. On September 1, 1980 ESPN became a 24 hour, 7 days a
week service, almost a year after its first launch. Then three years later, in
1983, ESPN was the first sports telecast presented in stereo in a USFL game
between Oakland and Philadelphia. But it wasn’t until 1987 when ESPN got its
first NFL cable contract, after this events ESPN started growing and with this,
new contracts came up and new technologies like the SkyCam. Today The WaltDisney Co. owns 80% of ESPN and more doors got open, for a variety range of
sports.
Looking at
the ESPN history, we can tell how people created a hunger to know more about
different types of sports. It also created a link from one country to another,
in which people from every countries living in different countries can now
watch the different sports they like. From Soccer, to American Foot Ball, to
Martial Arts; ESPN has created a huge audience, maybe the biggest audience in
the entertainment business.
In every
country of the world, there is a demand for sports. The competition between leagues
teams, countries, and even just to find new interests in the variety of sports
is what it has captivated us… the audience. ESPN is the #1 leader in sports and
it will continue to be. Why? Because we as fans need to feel what is like to
win.
